HOLIDAYS IN QATAR DURING RAMADAN: IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TOURISTS

Ramadan is a special and very beautiful month when life in Qatar slightly changes its rhythm. During this time, you can experience an atmosphere of respect, hospitality, and authentic local traditions.
To help you feel comfortable, we invite you to review answers to the most frequently asked questions about traveling to Qatar during this period:

1. How do restaurants and bars operate outside hotels?

During the daytime, most restaurants outside hotels remain closed. However, after sunset the city comes alive — venues open after iftar (sunset) and operate until late at night. For guests’ convenience, we recommend booking accommodation with at least a half-board meal plan.
Some well-known restaurant chains may offer takeaway options or daytime delivery services.

2. Is alcohol served anywhere outside hotels?

Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels.
During Ramadan, alcohol service may be slightly restricted — in most cases, beverages can be ordered through room service or in designated areas after iftar.

3. Are there any changes to the operating hours of shopping malls and souqs?

Shopping malls and traditional markets also adapt to the evening schedule:

  • they open later in the morning or in the afternoon,
  • take a short break before iftar,
  • and then reopen until late at night — sometimes even past midnight.

This makes it a great time to enjoy evening walks and shopping.

4. Are there any changes to excursions? What should be noted?

Excursions continue to operate, but schedules are often adjusted — many tours start in the afternoon or at sunset.
Daytime programs are generally quieter, with no eating or drinking in public, while evening tours — especially desert safaris — become truly magical thanks to the soft sunset light and the special atmosphere of Ramadan.

5. Are there any changes to museum opening hours?

Museums operate on a slightly adjusted schedule: daytime hours are usually shorter, and on some days museums reopen after iftar.
For exact opening times, it is recommended to check each museum’s official website.

6. Are there any changes in public transportation operations?

Metro, buses, and taxis continue to operate as usual.
In some cases, schedules may be slightly adjusted to extend service hours in the evening, making it convenient for late dinners and evening walks.

7. Dress code for tourists during Ramadan

During Ramadan, a slightly more modest style of clothing is recommended. Light outfits that cover shoulders and knees help show respect for local culture and feel appropriate in public places.
Beachwear, as usual, is acceptable on beaches and within hotel leisure areas.

8. Behavioral guidelines for tourists

During the daytime, eating, drinking, or smoking in public places such as streets and parks is discouraged as a sign of respect for those who are fasting.
It is also recommended to avoid loud music, public displays of affection, aggressive behavior, and the use of offensive language in public.
After sunset, guests can enjoy Qatar’s cuisine and the warm evening atmosphere.

9. Music in hotels and public places: when is it allowed?

During the day, music in public places is generally prohibited to maintain a calm environment.

In hotels:

  • Soft background music may be allowed
  • Live performances are usually limited or cancelled

During Ramadan, live music is not permitted. In bars, only recorded music is allowed. Major nightclubs may be closed, while most bars and pubs operate in the evening. Some venues may open before sunset.
After iftar, music may be permitted in licensed hotel venues, subject to official approval.

10. Public beaches: operating hours and restrictions

Public beaches remain open and are suitable for relaxation.
During the daytime, visitors are encouraged to behave calmly and respectfully, as restrictions apply to food, drinks, and music.
In the evening, beaches are perfect for enjoying the sea breeze and a peaceful atmosphere.
Hotel beaches operate as usual, in accordance with their internal regulations.
